Some 60 covers were posted from Papua-New Guinea with Australian definitive stamps in the 1950s at the Printed Matter Rate of 3 pence. There was some duplication in the postmarking and a selection was made of post offices that were uncommon in personal experience. They were all addressed to Dr. Allan Hauck, 730 Park Avenue, Newport, Kentucky, United States of America. The first cover front is the only one showed in its entirety, and the reverse was not seen in any of the covers. It had a block of 6 of the orange kangaroo ½d stamps, and it was cancelled with 3 strikes of the Papuan post office [P] DARU/ 23 JY 52/ PAPUA-NEW GUINEA postmark (Figure 1).
The other selected postmarks were all shown only as the stamps with their postmarks to save space and were denoted as [P] Papua, and [N] New Guinea, in the ‘List of Post and Telegraph Offices in the Commonwealth, 1963″, the exception being Chimbu which was not listed. In alphabetical order they were: ANGORAM [NG], CHIMBU, ESA’ ALA [P], KANDRIAN [NG], KIKORI [NG], LORENGAU [NG], LOSUIA [P], MAPRIK [NG], NAMATANAL [NG], & POPONDETTA [P] (Figures 2-11).
Allan Hauck was born in Springfield, Ohio, on May 19, 1925, the son of the late George and Alma Hauck. He graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and in 1947, he received the Master of Divinity from Hamma School of Theology in Springfield, Ohio.
Later that year, on July 12, 1947, he married Shirley Myers in Grand Rapids, Mich. and he went on to receive a Doctorate of Theology from Hartford Seminary Foundation, Hartford, Conn. In 1950.he completed post-graduate studies around the world, studying at Union Theological Seminary – New York, the University of Mexico, New York City College, Brown University, Yale University of London, the Near East School of Theology in Beirut, Lebanon, and Sri Venkatesuara University in Tirupati, India.
As a pastor, Allan served churches in Michigan, Kentucky and Indiana. He later devoted his efforts to teaching. From 1958-1968 he was Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Midland Lutheran College, Fremont, Neb. He was Professor of Religion at Carthage College, Kenosha, from 1968 until his retirement in 1989; as Professor Emeritus he was very active in campus life. He was the author of “Calendar of Christianity” and contributed to “The Story of Religion in Kenosha” for Kenosha’s Bicentennial History in 1976. He lectured widely on Judaism, Islam, and new religions.
He was passionate about philately, numismatics and travel. He was an internationally recognized authority on Reply Coupons and served as editor of The Reply Coupon Collector since its inception from 1954 to 1994. He published a number of specialized catalogs and contributed regularly to philatelic journals and magazines on four continents. He was President of COROS (Collectors of Religion on Stamps) for 20 years.
He was active in the Association of Lutheran Faculties and served as President in 1978. He was a devoted member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Above all else, Allan was a family man who will be remembered by family and friends for his delicious wit and intellectual curiosity. Dr. Allan Hauck, 83, passed away on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Lincoln Village Convalescent Center in Racine, Wisconsin, survived by his wife Shirley; and two daughters, Deborah and Tamara.
