50 YEARS ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE 17th MAY, 1928 to 17th MAY 1978

This cover celebrates the re-enactment of the first flight after 50 years of this successful medical service, and it shows the blue printed ‘Wings’insignia of the service, below which there is a short history of the organization, as well as a printed red ‘Shield’ outlining the re-enactment of the original flight from Cloncurry, Queensland to Julia Creek Queensland by the R.F.D.S. The advertising cover was for “The Chief Flushing Cistern”, approved by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works. 250,000 in Use. The red 1½d KGV Head stamp was cancelled with a roller postmark MELBOURNE/ 4.30 AM/ 20 APR/ 1928/ VICTORIA with the slogan COM’LTH ROLL/ CORRECT ENROLLMENT/ COMPULSORY. HENRY UPTON ALCOCK: ‘FATHER’ OF THE AUSTRALIAN BILLIARDS TRADE

Two registered covers were found advertising Alcock & Co., Billiard Table Manufacturers, 213 Russell Street, Melbourne and it also listed their addresses in the other colonies. The first had 2 QV stamps of Victoria (1d &2d) as well as the green ‘TWO PENNY’ Boer War Charity stamp, with a large ‘R’ in a circle handstamp, and the postmark REGISTERED MELBOURNE/ PM/ 2/ 27.6.00. The reverses was not seen (Figure 1).

I had no idea where these two printed- to- private- order advertising covers would lead me, and I was frankly surprised that the two brothers were to be found in the Australian Dictionary of Biography. Both covers were used in 1930 and the KGV oval 1d green stamps were postmarked with a slogan cancel, COMMONWEALTH LOAN/ NOW OPEN/ APPLY AT ONCE, at Sydney (Figure 1). Just another example of a Tattersall’s cover to Hobart, with the partially repaired spindle hole, but how wrong on several accounts!
